Better Education is the dream of every philosopher and educator. It is the agenda of every Principal, teacher and desire of every parent. To improve education we have, on numerous occasions, played with the syllabi and the policies making them more stringent. 1950s look comparatively much simpler than that of today, but there is no evidence that the students of today are more educated than those who got their school education in the past. Indus Learning initiative for Professional Development of teachers is an attempt to bring to surface another approach to significantly improve the quality of education by focusing not on the philosophy of education or the policies governing it but focusing on the delivery of education and enhancing the quality of teachers and teaching.
Education as a delivery process is controlled by individuals called teachers, who work in a fragmented and partially controlled environment. We say partially controlled because though organizations like NCERT, CBSE and ICSE have a total control on what is to be taught there is hardly any control on the environment in which the teaching takes place. By virtue of its profession a teacher is in total command of his/ her classroom and hence the effectiveness of education varies on the quality of the people who deliver education as the teachers.
Most often when a teacher begins her career there is no peer guidance available in a structured manner. As a result the development of a teacher is primarily based on classroom experience, which is gained over a long duration. INDUS LEARNING aims at shortening the time frame required by a new teacher to gain professional competency to meet the objectives of the profession of teaching in a respectable manner and to enhance the instruction of an experienced teacher.
The quality of teaching can be described to depend upon three factors described in the figure below.
An expert teacher displays in-depth understanding of concepts, excellent teaching skills and an enthusiastic attitude toward the subject.
A novice usually lacks in all three areas thereby failing to influence the learning in her student in a significant manner.
The aim of INDUS LEARNING is to empower teachers to gain expertise in a structured manner.
